Building safety: Check your smoke alarm

Unfortunately, a small number of our properties have experienced fires within the last few months, resulting from different causes. Some of the fires could have been avoided if safety procedures had taken place.

To check your smoke alarm, please follow these maintenance steps:

Weekly/monthly check: Press the test button for 5-20 seconds to ensure the alarm works.

Replace the batteries annually: Remember to set a reminder on your phone, diary or wall calendar.

Cleaning: Gently vacuum the smoke alarm case with a soft brush attachment to remove the dust.

Replacement: Your smoke alarm should be replaced every ten years.

Intermittent beeping: If you hear your smoke alarm beeping, this means the batteries need to be replaced immediately.

We must remain vigilant when it comes to fire safety, and most fires within the home are started by accident, therefore by completing a few simple safety checks, you can significantly reduce the risk of a fire starting. You can read our fire safety tips here.

And remember – Never tackle a fire yourself. Get out, stay out and call 999.
